The job hunt
I know you hear it on the news all the time, but I've been experiencing it. Y'all it's tough out there!
I have been on the job hunt for a year and a half, applied for dozens of jobs, yet only had a hand full of interviews. You see I have a weird education and work background. Apparently it's not very useful to most people. One would think that being a program manager of a federal grant (managing money, people, contracts, and actually running the program) would help you to be more qualified for positions.
Well I hate to burst your bubble, but I'm pretty much qualified to do nothing. Oh and then there are the positions for which I am "over" qualified for-people if I didn't want/need the job I wouldn't have applied! I realize that this is basically a secretary position, but if you pay enough to cover child care and money to pay a few bills I'll take it! Oh and I can type 68 wpm (thanks to Mrs. James), operate a computer, copier and fax machine! On occasion I can even be polite when I answer the phone.
Oh and before you ask: I'm not qualified (over qualified maybe) to do much of anything at a local health department, no hospitals don't pay people like me to educate patients (stupid insurance companies), and yes I've checked the newspaper/online. I guess I could go shout it from the mountain top since there's one nearby.
The news will tell you that more people are hiring, jobs are picking up, etc... And I'm sure they are, but try living an hour away from the nearest big city. A city in which you really don't know anyone, or even know someone who knows someone! The city that probably has the most opportunity for you.
There are a couple of people locally that are really trying very hard to help me find something, and for them I am truly grateful. It's just that nothing has worked out so far.
So if you have a job, even if it's one you don't like so much, be grateful, and if you are looking- I feel your pain!!
Oh, and for those of you that might be interviewing/hiring folks- Please have the decency to call them and let them know if you are not going to be hiring them after you interview them. I had an interview with a local lawyer a couple of months ago, and I'm still waiting to see if I got the job! I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

Thanks for telling me that I am not qualified for anything after running a federal grant program. I so appreciate that!
